Club 26944

Saturday, May 13th, 2017

Yesterday, PHS was flashed back to 1975!
“Welcome to Club 26944,” began one of our Fourth Graders at yesterday’s Mothers’ Day assembly. “This is a place of respect, where we seize every opportunity to let all of our members shine!”
And shine they did as our Fourth Graders shared stories of learning life lessons from their moms.
“All the moms at Club 26944 became members,” explained Catherine, “because they are forward thinking and want us to belong to a school community that respects individual gifts.”
“And,” continued Marcus, “we want all you moms to know how grateful we are for joining this exclusive club and for all the wonderful things you do for us!”
These students went on to celebrate the Disco Era with music and dance under the direction of our fabulous Ms. Deb Wilcox, which was further enlivened by two surprise faculty guests at the Club – Mr. Ahn and Mr. Zack!
What a delight to conclude the program with all our moms joining their children and sharing disco dance moves with each other!

Under the Tuscan Sun!

Saturday, May 6th, 2017

“When our school seems to shine, With our teachers divine, That’s Amore!” sang our beautiful students to our teachers on Tuesday, as our faculty enjoyed the very “Under the Tuscan Sun” Teacher Appreciation Luncheon.
Amid lemon-and-sunflower-decorated tables, our parents feted each member of our staff with an amazing luncheon, complete with gifts and favors! The setting was relaxing and truly “Vita Bella”!
Bouquets of thanks to each and every parent, including those supervising the playground, as they recognized our amazing staff and made this fantastic event possible!

Happy Holidays

Saturday, December 17th, 2016

“Jingle Bells, jingle bells!” was heard earlier this morning, as our PHS Choir caroled from classroom to classroom, accompanied by our ukulele-playing Music Teacher, CarolingMr. Charley Miller. The children’s enthusiasm for the holiday season is matched by the special parties and activities that parents and teachers are presenting in each grade today.
Thank you to all our teachers, staff, and administrators who join with parents, grandparents, relatives, and friends to make this time of the year so very special for each child!
Have a wonderful Winter Break, and we’ll see you in the New Year!

Harvest Hoedown

Saturday, October 31st, 2015

Harvest Hoedown Happiness! Sincere thanks go to our fabulously organized Co-Chairs, Tristen Moffett and Kate McKenna, and our amazing parent volunteers who created and presented, along with our faculty and staff members, each of the terrific Hoedown activities! Thanks also to all those who came to Hoedown, sponsored items, and participated in the Basket Raffle, the Teacher Adventures, and the yummy Bake Sale! To see the children laughing and enjoying the simple pleasures of the tire swing, the face painting, the sack races and the petting zoo was a delightful respite in this age of high-tech! A huge thanks also goes to all the dads who lifted, folded, moved, stacked, packed, and stayed to the very end of the event. Their willing assistance was invaluable. The entire day was a beautiful example of the enthusiasm and camaraderie we all share here at PHS!

Educator of the Year!

Friday, October 23rd, 2015

We are proud to announce that our Educator of the Year for 2015-2016 at PHS is Ms. Deb Wilcox! As you all know, Miss Deb is our Theater Arts teacher, sharing her enormous talent and experience with our students in their Assembly presentations, the year-end Musical, our fabulous Fifth Grade Play, and in so many other ways.
“It is a thrill and an honor to receive this recognition by my colleagues and peers,” remarks Miss Deb. “I love coming to school each and every day to work with our talented, bright, caring students here at PHS. They are creative, full of enthusiasm, and have a love for the performing arts.”
Ms. Wilcox will be honored along with ten other outstanding educators from PV’s public and private schools at the annual Educator of the Year event. This very special occasion is presented by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Rotary at the PV Golf Club on Wednesday evening, November 4, 2015. A number of Miss Deb’s fellow teachers, administrators, friends, and family will be sharing the evening’s reception, dinner, and program with our esteemed Miss Deb!

Diving the Galapagos

Friday, September 18th, 2015

PHS’s Science Teacher, Kathy Mallon, will be part of a research group going to various dive sites in the Galapagos Islands for ten days this coming February, 2016.
Ms. Mallon is a highly experienced deep sea diver, a Technical Divemaster and Full Cave diver. She loves diving in remote sites and is excited about being invited on this amazing research experience.
Lying about 600 miles off the west coast of Ecuador, the remote Galapagos Islands and surrounding waters hold a huge diversity of land and marine species.
“We will be diving from a marine research vessel off the coasts of Wolf, Darwin, and North Seymour Islands,” relates Ms. Mallon. “In February, the currents are stronger, but the waters will be warm, clear, and filled with a tremendous amount of food for all the living creature.”
While specimens cannot be removed from the islands, Kathy Mallon will be taking a GoPro and an underwater camera and promises to return to PHS with a wonderful collection of photos and videos to share with our students!

Back-to-School Night

Saturday, September 12th, 2015

Thank you for being so gracious and kind – especially to me – at last evening’s Back-to-School Night. We had a beautiful evening – actually, more like New Orleans than Palos Verdes – but we all survived! Thank you to Magda Joye, Kate McKenna, and Tristen Moffett for the delicious and lovely buffet that was provided for all of us to enjoy.
We extend our gratitude to our new families who all came with wonderful questions and who are so happy to have their children here at PHS.
As always, we are so proud of our outstanding faculty and staff in preparing for an outstanding year with your children.
All in all, it was an outstanding evening, and we look forward to many more such events in the future!

We extend a warm welcome to our newest Science Lab teacher, Dr. Mary Wilson, DDS, who is teaching hands-on science to our current Seventh Graders in the Lab. Dr. Wilson is a graduate of the School of Dentistry of USC, and she also holds a degree in zoology. Dr. Wilson is no stranger to Peninsula Heritage School. From 1997-2006 she volunteered in our Science Department with Mrs. Kathy Mallon, and her own two children are also PHS graduates. We extend our gratitude to this remarkable woman who loves both children and science!
