Choir Performs at Festival

Saturday, December 3rd, 2016

Proudly wearing their blue choir robes, our PHS Student Choir enthusiastically started their performance at Torrance Memorial’s Holiday Festival with the Full Choirupbeat “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm!”
Participating in the Medical Center’s three-day long Festival was a first for our PHS Choir, with parents, friends, PHS faculty, staff, and Mrs. Cailler fully enjoying this holiday experience amid the Festival’s gorgeously decorated trees.
Previously, the choir has only sung at campus events. Knowing that this performance was upcoming, the Choir has been enthusiastically practicing and anticipating this event.
PHS Choir Director and Music Teacher Mr. Charley Miller shares the following beautiful experience that occurred at the Festival:Four Girls
“As we arrived at our location prior to performing, a musician was playing Christmas songs on the piano. Spontaneously, one by one, our Choir members gathered around her and began to sing. It was a wonderful and completely impromptu experience.”
Mr. Miller continues, “The parents of our Choir members were incredibly supportive and relished this experience.”
“We really liked singing Christmas songs for our parents and with our friends,” exclaimed a youthful choir member, following the choir’s closing number, “In the Spirit.”
The Festival’s beginning stretches back to 1984 when a group of Torrance Memorial volunteers launched this unique community festival to directly benefit the Medical Center and the care it provides to citizens of the South Bay.
What a wonderful way for our students to begin the holiday season!

Construction Update

Saturday, January 9th, 2016

As you know, construction is well underway on our new 7th & 8th Grade buildings on the St. Luke’s campus across the street! The windows and a good portion of the outside work are completed, which is fortunate now that the “El Nino” rains have arrived. The construction focus is now on the interior of the three buildings. Dry wall is up, and carpets, tile flooring, counter tops, and cabinets have been selected. We are very excited about this fabulous new addition to our school, as we look forward to inviting our parents, alumni, and members of our community for an Open House to experience these beautiful new facilities.

Welcome!

Friday, September 4th, 2015

Can you believe it? We’re back – and ready to shine for 2015-2016!
Have you heard that we have a new 7thand 8th Grade project down the street? We will have an Open House there for everyone to enjoy as soon as the refurbishing of the buildings is complete.  In the meantime, our 7th and 8th Graders are joining us here.
It is wonderful to have great enrollment, beautiful classrooms, and an unbeatable staff. Of course, none of this would be possible without lovely parents who support us and are always willing to lend a hand.
Here’s to a safe, wonderful, and academically challenging school year!
PS – You and your children may wish to visit our Little Free Library, located outside and across from our School Office! Take a book – leave a book!

Hour of Code

Friday, December 12th, 2014

Peninsula Heritage’s Computer Science teacher, Ms. Stella Demis, shares news about our students’ participation in this week’s international “Hour of Code”!
Our students’ success as adults will depend a great deal on their understanding of technology. During December 8-14, designated as Computer Science Education Week, our students will be furthering their knowledge of one of the 21st century’s foundational skills: computer coding. In this way, we are preparing PHS students to be at the forefront of creating the technologies of the future.
This week we are joining other students worldwide to reach the goal of 100 million youth participating in the “Hour of Code.” Each class here at PHS, starting with Kindergarten, is receiving coding instruction using www.code.org. This site enables students to grasp an overview of coding and to create a visual design according to their own instructions. Beginning with direct assistance in Kindergarten, each grade’s students work at ever more independent levels in this coding process.
Coding has always been an integral part of the PHS Sixth Grade computer science curriculum. This year we will be using Kahn Academy instruction in learning Java programing language. Our Seventh Grade students demonstrated their knowledge of various computer coding languages during last week’s presentation of their “Genius Hour” projects!
You may wish to try a little coding yourself !

Welcome Back

Saturday, September 6th, 2014

Greetings and Salutations! Welcome back to PHS. Our first week of school went very smoothly. The children warmed our hearts, and the numerous hugs made it even more special.
Congratulations to our staff for all of their hard work, and thanks to our maintenance crew for all of their efforts in making our classrooms and campus sparkle.
Thanks to each of you, parents, for making the drop-off and parking proceed so smoothly. We continue to ask for your assistance in this regard as we plan for our upcoming Back-to-School Night (Sept. 11) and first All-School Assembly (Sept. 19).
As you know, our New Family Orientation will be this coming Thursday, September 11, starting at 5:00 pm in the School Library. We look forward to personally meeting each of you on this evening, either at this Orientation or at the Back-to-School Night commencing at 6:00 pm.  Coffee and desserts will be waiting for you, and each of your children’s classroom teachers will share very pertinent information for that grade.
Have a lovely weekend!
