STEM + Entrepreneurship

Thursday, March 9th, 2017

STEM studies and entrepreneurship are blooming in Mrs. DeMarti’s Third Grade class this month! The children watched the “Cain’s Arcade” viral video and decided they wanted to build their own arcade games. Tie Dying ShirtsWith one cardboard box per student, they each designed and built a game, which they will debut for parents and visitors on Thursday, March 23, from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon. Seeing themselves as socially conscious entrepreneurs, these students decided that all fees collected at the Third Grade Arcade will be donated to the World Wildlife Fund.
Since one of the Third Graders already has his own business, http://rainbowsandfaeries.com/#, Drying the Tie Dyed ShirtsMrs. DeMarti asked Nikolas if he would tie dye a shirt for each class member. The answer was yes and the results are beautiful! The Third Graders will be wearing their new shirts when you come to visit on March 23rd. See you then!

Rawhide Ranch

Our Third Graders enjoyed a wonderful Outdoor Education experience at Rawhide Ranch in San Diego County last week. Science Teacher Kathy Mallon, along with Mrs. Debbie Schwartz, and several PHS parents, accompanied the students. Kathy shares the experience with us:
This year’s Third Grade class is truly unique, since so many of the children exhibited great courage as they challenged themselves in physical activities that they had never tried before. They climbed the rock wall, ate at the chuck wagon, and slept in the bunk house. During the excellent team-building events our children exhibited the PHS spirit in their trust and loyalty toward each other. We are so proud of these students, as Third Grade marks the first time that our children have a three-day outdoor adventure.
Rawhide is truly a ranch with its horses, cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, and even llamas! Our students become ranch hands as they were responsible for the cleaning, care, and feeding of these animals.
Of particular interestwere the many lessons about horsemanship directed by the Ranch’s excellent staff. Our Third Graders learned, step by step, the necessary skills that culminated in their great horseback riding experience! The many benefits of our stay at the Ranch are obvious and long-lasting!

Dance, Dance, Dance!

What better way for children to enjoy movement skills than through music and dancing – especially on a rainy day! Our PE instructor, Mrs. Kim Nygaard shares with us the secrets of this Revolution:
Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) is an exciting experience for our Kindergarten through Seventh Grade students. We are all aware of the importance of strengthening children’s eye-hand coordination, but how often do we work at seeing visual cues and then moving our feet? By following rapid instructions shown on a wide screen TV with appropriate foot movements, our PHS students strengthen their eye-foot coordination, exercise, and have a great time!
The DDR program is hooked to a PlayStation and a large TV screen. Starting at the Beginner level, the children follow the arrows on the screen that move side to side and forward to back by appropriately moving their feet on the specially-designed floor mats. The children can pick their level of difficulty and their own song, and they soon learn, like many things, that it looks easier than it actually is! With practice, the children gain confidence and advance in this unique exercise format!
